Baby Blues
It's quite common for new mothers to experience the baby blues once they have given birth to their baby. The term baby blues is often used to describe a milder type of post natal depression which can leave new mothers feeling teary, worried and out of sorts. They simply won't feel as happy as they think they should be feeling at this stage.
The key thing to remember with the baby blues is that they are a common occurrence and they won't last forever. Most cases will go away on their own in a few days or weeks once your hormones settle down again. If, however, you feel worse than a mild case of feeling down and teary and the feelings don't go away then you may have post natal depression and may need some extra help to cope with this.
You also shouldn't be afraid to talk to your health visitor or doctor if you feel that you are suffering from the baby blues as their support can be invaluable to you here. They will be able to reassure you, to offer helpful tips and advice and to keep an eye on you which in itself may make you feel better.
It is also a good tip to make sure that your friends and family know what you are going through and that they give you help and support with caring for your new baby. Often many mothers suffering from the baby blues simply feel that they cannot cope with the baby or with the changes in their life so some support here can be useful.
It's also important to take care of yourself. Make sure that you eat regularly and maintain a healthy diet. Try to get out and about and to meet up with other mothers during the day. This will get you out of the house, give you some fresh air and exercise and will give you access to people who understand how you are feeling.
